PhD student Hajita, first identified the regulatory mechanism of bone destruction of 'Bisphenol A', an environmental disruptor

하지타(제주대 BK21 연구원) 1.jpgThe JNU research team first identified the fact that bisphenol A, a kind of environmental hormone, can cause bone absorption via a new receptor, and furthermore, cause osteoporosis-like symptoms.

The research result of Hajita (Sri Lankan student, academic advisor Kim Ki-young) was published in the ‘Journal of Hazardous Materials’ (Impact factor: 14.224, JCR top 3.05% in the field of environmental science). He completed a doctoral course in the Department of Marine Life Sciences at JNU and is currently participating in the BK21 Future Strategy Fisheries Life Industry Education Research Group.

The study found for the first time that bisphenol A, known only to cause disturbance in the hormone system through estrogen receptors, can cause osteoporosis-like symptoms, activating lower cell signals by binding to retinoic acid-related orphan receptor-α (nuclear receptor involved in various metabolisms and physiological pathways).

This research was conducted with the support of basic research conducted by the National Research Foundation of Korea and the Autonomous Focused Research Institute of Jeju National University.
