JNU Research Institute for the Tamla Culture, attempting a new interpretation of 4·3 & 10?19

JNU Research Institute for the Tamla Culture (Director Kim Chi-wan) held an academic conference “under the theme of "New Interpretation of 4·3 and 10?19" in order to commemorate the 56th anniversary of the opening of the Institute at JNU's College of Humanities on the 31st of March.

 

The conference began with an opening speech by Kim Chi-wan, Director of JNU's Research Institute for the Tamla Culture, and with the congratulatory speech by Kang Sung-ho, Head of Humanities Academy at Suncheon National University and Oh Young-hoon, Governor of Jeju Special Self-Governing Province.

A total of four research results were published; △ The Martial Law and a Court Martial (Noh Young-ki, Chosun University) △ Urban characteristics of Yeosu and Suncheon before 10·19 (Woo Seung-wan, Suncheon National University) △ Analysis of the 4·3 discourse through text mining (Kang Jin-gu, Jeju National University) △ Family-centeredness of 4·3 solution discourse and Genderized Inheritance Rights (Kim Sang-ae, Jeju National University).

 

Director Kim Chi-wan said, "This conference is meaningful in that it attempted a new interpretation based on the 'joint study on Yeosu 10·19 and Jeju 4·3' conducted by the Humanities Academy at Suncheon National University and JNU's Research Institute for the Tamla Culture." He added, “With this opportunity, JNU expects the network that Yeosu, Suncheon, and Jeju, as well as urban spaces hidden in the dark parts of modern and contemporary Korean history are substantially in solidarity and research.to expand and become active.”

 

JNU Research Institute for the Tamla Culture opened in 1967 as the Jeju Island Problem Research Institute and celebrated its 56th anniversary this year. JNU Research Institute for the Tamla Culture 98+*u has been actively researching history, culture, and philosophy based on Jeju. Based on this, the researcher was recently selected as a research institute for the Humanities and Social Research Institute Support Project of the Korea Research Foundation in September 2019. The institute has been studying the ways to coexist with refugees, migration, and others from the perspective of "Kumda," one of Jeju's identities. Utilizing the accumulated research achievements, the institute is also seeking to spread the results of its research to the public through holding various domestic and international academic conferences, publishing series, and Kumda Academy, etc.
