JNU and Jeju Special Self-Governing Province (hereafter, Jeju-do) jumped into the "Glocal University 30 Project" by the Ministry of Education in April.

‘The Glocal University 30 Project’ is a large-scale financial support project that evaluates the universities’ innovation strategy in connection with the region and selects 30 universities by 2026 to provide a total of KRW 100 billion for five years. All national and private universities in the non-metropolitan area put their fate on the line to attract this project. There also are jitters that without being selected in the project, universities as well as regions could be in serious trouble.

In addition to 'Local-University Cooperation-based Regional Innovation Project (RIS)', JNU and Jeju-do plan to lay the foundation for a major leap forward in Jeju by attracting ‘Glocal University 30 Project’.

JNU has declared a drastic reorganization that breaks the boundaries between the university and the outside world in connection with the region. JNU pursues bold educational innovation such as academic structure and curriculum convergence to integrate universities and departments and foster customized human resources necessary for local industries in order to respond to diversified social demands and ensure students' various educational options.

In addition, JNU seeks to innovate a consumer-centered decision-making system that quickly reflects the needs of industries and regions by reorganizing it into a competency-oriented professors appointment system and opening university governance.

Jeju-do promised bold support for JNU’s internal innovation. Jeju-do plans to provide the existing budget applied to JNU and intensive support by linking the budget for RIS projects with the promotion of university innovation strategies. It promised massive support at the Jeju-do level, including budget and regulatory reform, to grow into a glocal university by fostering talent and strengthening research capabilities related to the promotion of future new industries in the 8th popular election.

JNU and Jeju-do expressed the aspirations to achieve the ‘Glocal University TOP’ through the Glocal University 30 project. Jeju Governor Oh Young-hoon and JNU President Kim Eel-hwan agreed that the Glocal University 30 project is the last opportunity for Jeju to make a great leap forward in a poor industrial environment compared to other regions.

The two organizations reveal their strong ambitions saying, “‘The Glocal University 30 Project’ is not just for a JNU project, but for a project created by Jeju-do and JNU. So, attracting this project allows JNU and Jeju-do to grow JNU into the best glocal university in Korea.”
