The JNU Museum (Director Paik Young-Gyung) has been holding a special exhibition to commemorate the 71st anniversary of the opening of the museum from the 9th of June to the 7th of July.

The special exhibition, which is a part of a national university development project, is held as an exchange exhibition with the Hansen's Disease Museum of the National Sorokdo Hospital, introducing about 80 items, including 15 national registered cultural properties such as the data related to Jeju on Hansen's disease, relics of Hansen people in Sorokdo Island, records to promote human rights, etc.

In addition, 19 artworks by Sorokdo artists have been displayed in the central hall on the first floor of the museum. 7 Sorokdo artists attended the opening ceremony.

The exhibition consists of four parts; △ Sorokdo, a beautiful island of Goheung △ Jeju and Hansen's disease △ Hansen's life in Sorokdo △ With hope beyond the world.

Part 1 introduces Sorokdo Island, which resembles a baby deer. Part 2 introduces Jeju's "Gumjilmak.", which was established by Ki Geon, a governor in the Joseon Dynasty. Gumjilmak is known as Korea's first national treatment facility for leprosy. It also shows newspaper articles and living relics related to Hansen's disease in Jeju after Japanese colonial era.

In the part 3 and 4, you can see living artifacts that can understand the lives of the Hansen people. Due to nerve paralysis, Hansen's hands are bent. So they worked out a design on household goods such as pot-handles, button-fasteners and spoons. Joint labor tools such as tile frames, cement block frames, and logging sickles are also exhibited.

In particular, on the eve of the opening ceremony, a tour of Jeju culture was held with Sorokdo residents and JNU students. JNU's Ara Volunteer Group, consisting of JNU students and faculty members, did volunteer work in Sorokdo Island from 2013 to 2015.

Paik Young-Gyung, Director of the JNU museum, said, "I hope this exhibition will be a place to sympathize with the fact that the history of the Hansen people is not their own history or Sorokdo Island, but Jeju's history and Korea’s history." adding, “JNU hopes this exhibition will contribute a little to help us break down the walls of the world and find hope together”

Since the opening ceremony at 2 p.m. on the 9th of June, JNU Museum has opened its exhibition room on weekends during the exhibition period. The opening hours of JNU Museum is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
