JNU Tamna Research Institute (Director Kim Chi-wan) "Research Team on Multicultural Perception in the Age of Population Extinction" (hereinafter JNU team) was selected as the 2022 Humanities Policy Excellence Achievement Subject by National Research Council for Economics, Humanities and Social Sciences(NRC).
The research team consisted of the following members: Chief Resercher Prof. Kim Chi-wan (Department of Philosophy), Prof. Cho Eun-hee (Law School), Research Prof. Kim Jun-pyo, and Research Prof. Kang Jin-gu (JNU Tamna Research Institute). From December 2022 to April 2023, JNU team conducted research on the topic "Enhancing Citizens' Multicultural Competence Using Kumda Literature.“
NRC is a public institution under the Prime Minister's office, established with the purpose of supporting and fostering research institutions in the fields of economics, humanities, and social sciences. Its main objective is to contribute to the nation's research policy support and knowledge industry development through systematic management. In accordance with its founding objectives, the organization offers and supports various policy research projects in the fields of economics, humanities, and social sciences. In 2022 JNU team was selected for the project call on "Research on Multicultural Perception in the Age of Population Extinction."
The JNU team suggested that measures to overcome population decline era and enhance multicultural awareness can be found in "Kumda Humanities" from Jeju culture. Accordingly, based on the comprehensive diagnosis and in-depth evaluation of the status of multicultural education in Korea, the team sought a multicultural education model suitable for the era of population decline and proposed a legal reflection plan to implement it. In particular, the team's proposal that multicultural education should incorporate both a universal approach targeting the general public and a targeted approach focusing on immigrants simultaneously drew attention.
JNU Tamna Research Institute of Culture is carrying out various tasks to establish the "Kumda Humanities" derived from their research supported by the Humanities and Social Sciences Research Promotion Project, as a policy-oriented humanities field. "Kumda Humanities" is being studied in depth as an alternative to deal with the controversial issues related to reciprocity and hospitality cultures which have become contentious topics in European refugee policies. JNU research team participated in the joint session of the 2nd Korea Humanities and Social Sciences Research Institute Council Excellence and Dissemination Academic Conference, which was organized in collaboration with the Economics and Humanities Social Research Society. During this session, titled 'Humanities Policy Special Committee - Humanities Policy,' the team presented the achievements on 10th of July, 2023.
