The cradle of student growth, a university that creates new values

KRW 30 million Scholarship from Dr. Lee Si-Hyang, late Jeju Korean Japanes

The scholarship presentation took place in JNU conference room on Sept. 13. Dr. Lee Si-Hyang's nephew, Lee Sang-Hoon, the former president of the Jeju Residents' Association in Japan, presented a total of KRW 30 million in scholarships to 15 students, including So Sung-Oh, a student in the Department of Arts and Design.

 

The Dr. Lee Si-Hyang scholarship fund has been established since 2005 with the aim of discovering and supporting talented students contributing to Jeju and Korea. Currently, the fund has reached a total of KRW 1.3 billon. Since 2013, scholarships have been awarded to JNU students every year for 11 years.

 

These recipients included two students from Dr. Lee Si-Hyang's hometown, Hangeong-myeon in Jeju, and two graduates of Jeju Jungang High School.

 

Dr. Lee had a special affection for his hometown, Jeju, and had donated a total of KRW 2.012 billion to JNU development fund from 2010. He also contributed JPY 10 million to support the successful hosting of the 1988 Seoul Olympics and provided JPY 10 million for the Tokyo headquarters construction of the Korean Residents Union in Japan and KRW 50 million for the Hangeong-myeon Township Office.

 

In recognition of these contribution, the late Dr. Lee won various awards during his lifetime, including government sports medals, the Jeju Island Cultural Award, and the Japanese Red Cross Gold Merit Award. He also received JNU honorary doctorate in business administration in 2010, and the Order of Civil Merit Moranjang for his contributions to friendly exchanges between Korea and Japan in 2012.

 

Dr. Lee was active in various organizations, serving as an advisor to the Korean Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Tokyo, an advisor to the Korean Sports Council in Japan, an advisor to the Korean Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Japan, as well as the president and advisor of the Jeju Residents' Association in Japan, and an advisor to the Jeju Sports Council.
