JNU (President Kim Eel-hwan) announced that Ko Hye-eun, a student supervised by Professor Oh Hong-shik from the Department of Global Education in its Graduate School of Education (headed by Professor Kwon Sang-cheol), has been hired as a full-time teacher in the U.S. Ms. Ko recently completed the "GTU Master's Joint Curriculum Support Project" after graduating with a major in Biological Education from the College of Education.
In accordance with an MOU signed between Jeju National University and the University of North Alabama in the U.S. in August 2024, Ms. Ko studied in the Department of Global Education for a year. She successfully passed the U.S. teacher certification exam and was officially hired as a science teacher at Northside High School in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Due to the shortage of teachers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields in the U.S., she had an advantage in securing the position.
Professor Kwon Sang-cheol said, "It is highly meaningful that such excellent results have been achieved even after the conclusion of the GTU (Global Teachers' University) Master's Joint Curriculum Support Project." He added, "Although financial support from the research project has ended, JNU actively provides administrative support, maintaining a multi-degree system with tuition reduction benefits for U.S. graduate schools."
The graduate dual-degree system allows students to obtain degrees from both JNU and overseas universities simultaneously, operating on a 1.5-year plus 1-year model. Students can earn a master's degree by completing a one-year course in the United States after studying at JNU.
This program enables students to experience various disciplines and cultures while attending U.S. universities. Furthermore, if they wish, they can obtain a U.S. teacher's license and seek employment as a teacher in the U.S., or pursue opportunities at international schools in Korea, such as those in Jeju English Education City.
