5 research projects lure 23 billion krw grant support

 

 

Jeju National University (Song Seok-Eon, President) has announced last Wednesday (November 4, 2020) that five BK21 projects [4th stage BK (Brain Korea) program] were picked by the Ministry of Education to receive 7-year research grants totaling 23,000,000,000 won.

 

The 4th stage BK21 program aims at training master’s and doctoral level scientists needed for world university class research (for 7 years, until 2077) for the forthcoming 4th industrial revolutionary era.

 

Of the total grant amount, 16.7 and 6.3 billion won will be allocated for educational program and graduate school reform, respectively.

 

Jeju National University had submitted 6 project proposals for governmental funding, and 5 of them were successful in luring the funding in the areas of △marine life science, bigdata (Earth and Ocean Interdisciplinary Faculty), △energy industry/new sustainable energy (Energy Applied System Interdisciplinary Faculty) △bio-health/cutting edge drugs (Next Generation Interdisciplinary Science and Technology Cooperation Program), and △humanity and Society Interdisciplinary Area, an impressive 83.3% success rate for the grant funding, exceeding nationwide average of just over 55%.

 

Specific BK21 projects funded include △”Global Hub : Fisheries Life Science Education Project (Professor Chun Yoo Jin, Principal Investigator),” △Innovative Personnel Training Education Project for Jeju Energy & New Industry Advancement (Professor Kim Sang Jae, Principal Investigator), △”Big OCEAN: Bigdata-based Ocean Interdisciplinary Science Education Project (Professor Bae Jin Ho, Principal Investigator),” △”Bio-health/Innovative New Drugs Global/Subtropical Bio-resource Personnel Education Project (Professor Lee Dong Sun, Principal Investigator),” and △”Solution to the Regional Industry Society Issues through Data Science-based Interdisciplinary Humanities Personnel Education Project (Professor Kim Min Cheol, Principal Investigator).”

 

President Song commented that the BK21 grants would enable the university to pursue the goal of developing a national research-centered institution in Jeju.
