Jeju black pigs with improved pork quality gets patented

Research teams of Professors Lee Dong Sun and Son Young Ok, RDA Next Generation Biogreen 21 Research Project, and in collaboration with Chonbuk National University/Clonex, reported they succeeded in developing gene-marker and higher meat quality Jeju swine breed fed with Lactobacillus-tailormade feed.
The technology to improve the characteristics of the Jeju pig was transferred to Clonex (Son Young Joon, CEO) for commercialization.
The project has been administered by the RDA next generation biogreen 21 project under the direction of Professor Lee Hak Kyo of the project’s animal molecular genetic breeding program.
The research teams succeeded in developing the production of Jeju mini pig obtained from the growth-related technology and genomic characterization studies.
Results have been published in in an international journal and the patent was acquired before transferring the technology to the company.
The research teams plan to continue the efforts to develop other types of Jeju mini pigs such as probiotics-containing feed for the production of better quality pork.
