Curcumin may open avenue to dementia therapy

아열대원예산업연구소, 카르틱 연구 교수 OECD지원으로 하버드 의대와 공동연구 수행 Dr. Karthikeyan of SHRS to work with Harvard medical team under OECD grant
Research Professor A. Karthikeyan of the Jeju National University Subtropical Horticulture Research Institute (Lee Hyo-Yeon, Director) plans to conduct a joint research on the efficacy of curcumin as a dementia therapeutic agent with a Harvard Medical School team, it was announced earlier today (December 21, 2020).
Curcumin is the yellow pigment component of the curry isolated from the roots of Curcuma longa).
His research gets support from the OECD under its sustainable agriculture research project (CRP) with a collaborative team of Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital.
Professor Min Tae Sun of the Jeju National University Animal Biotechnology Faculty who co-works with Dr. Karthikeyan said that curcumin has been known to possess anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and anti-oxidant activities, but its therapeutic efficacy has been limited due to the low absorptivity.
Professor Min’s team has been working on the absorptivity of the patented curcumin nanosphere particles using model pig animal model under the grant support from the Ministry of Science and Technology and the National Research Foundation of Korea.
He expects the curcumin nanosphere plays an important role in the JNU-Harvard collaborative research.
