A new film imaging apparatus to monitor nuclear radiation, for anti-terror surveyance and non-nuclear radiation spread is being developed by a Jeju National University research team.

Professor Chung Man Hee and his team (Bhoo Ji Hwan, a MS associate) are in the midst of developing a world’s first portable and real time visualized neutron and gamma radiation apparatus.

The research ultimately aims at providing means to resolve urgent national and societal issues in the monitoring and evaluating the nuclear materials and their translocation/use in in the denuclearization policy of North Korea.

The present results represent part of Professor Chung’s investigation of unreported nuclear activity and its rapid monitoring double neutron film imaging technology. The nuclear safety research project is being carried out with the support from the nuclear safety foundation (nuclear safety committee).

Professor Chung’s team has just submitted a paper entitled “Compact lightweight imager of both gamma rays and neutrons based on a pixelated stilbene scintillator coupled to a silicon photomultiplier array” to the prestigious journal “Scientific Reports”, a Nature’s sister periodical (accepted for publication).

Professor Chung is the first author of the multi-authored publication coauthored with Dr. Mark D. Hamming of the University of Michigan.
