Nuclear Energy Institute to Collaborate with Lava Seawater Center

Jeju National University Nuclear Energy Technology Research Institute (Choi Soo Seok, Director) signed the agreement with Jeju TechnoPark Lava Seawater Center (Chang Won Kook, Director) for collaboration in monitoring the Jeju regional radioactivity levels, especially in lava-sea water samples.

The bilateral agreement also aims at conducting research and commercialization of the products used for monitoring the radioactivity of seawater.

Director Choi pointed out that the sea water monitoring of radioactivity in Jeju provides critical information about potential contamination of the Jeju sea water with radioactivity released from the tsunami-induced Fukushima nuclear powerplant explosion.

The JNU nuclear research institute has been conducting a variety of radioactivity monitoring in Jeju under the authorization from the Food and Drug Safety Administration.
