Subtropical Horticultural Research Institute and kenaf processing firm to cooperate for R&D

Jeju National University’s Subtropical Horticultural Research Institute (SHRI) and SJ Global, a kenaf processing firm, signed a memorandum of understanding to boost cooperation in research and development.
Under the agreement, the SHRI will use different kenaf varieties held by SJ Global to improve and develop superior traits of kenaf species.
During the signing ceremony, Shin Myeong-hwan, CEO of SJ Global, explained that kenaf is useful in reducing foul odor from livestock manure. Shin also emphasized that kenaf owned by his company can be used to manufacture solid biofuel, helping resolve the issues concerning Jeju Island’s waste plastic processing.
SHRI director Lee Hyo-yeon expected that the MOU will lay the groundwork for utilizing genetic resources of eco-friendly kenaf varieties. Additionally, Lee pledged that SHRI will work to mitigate impacts of plastic wastes and livestock sludge.
