Environmental Health Center warns about symptoms of pollen allergy

Jeju National University’s Environmental Health Center under the Ministry of Environment advised to take precautions against allergic diseases caused due to pollen from cedar trees.

According to the center’s announcement on Tuesday (March 9), cedar trees are a representative springtime anemophilous plant which typically causes allergic rhinitis, dermatitis, and asthma.

Every spring, researchers from the center capture and monitor the generation and distribution of cedar tree pollen.

The research findings suggest that cedar trees started blooming flowers in the southern part of Jeju Island on Jan. 23, with the pollen release in the northern area beginning the following day.

Pollen from cedar trees exhibit the highest level of antigenicity in February and March, continuing to be released throughout early April.

As the pollen release increases between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., the center issues advisories to avoid outdoor activities. It is also advised to wear face masks when outdoors and clean the pollen out after returning home. Medical treatment may be required for worsening allergic symptoms such as nasal obstruction, runny nose, and sneezes.

More information is available on the centers website at http://www.e-safejeju.or.kr. Visitors to the site can also arrange consulting services.
