New departments on advanced sciences to be established next year

Ministry of Education approved opening of Data Sciences Department, etc. … 65 more students to be granted admission

Jeju National University will open three new departments on state-of-the-art technologies such as artificial intelligence.

According to the university, the nation’s Ministry of Education approved late in February the new departments which the school plans to establish in 2022.

The courses will be named the Department of Data Sciences, Artificial Sciences Major in the Faculty of Software, and Department of Biomedical Information. Winning the approval of the new departments, the university expects its admission capacity to rise by 65 students.

The nation’s education authorities have recently encouraged colleges to focus more on advanced sciences education, although the shrinking number of school-aged children has resulted in demand for reducing the university sizes. In line with the government’s efforts to lead the development of future-oriented technologies, the Jeju National University decided to allocate its transmission admission capacity to the related departments.

When established, the Department of Data Sciences and the Artificial Intelligence Major will focus their curricula on the AI and big data technologies.

The Department of Biomedical Information will foster talented individuals in the biomedical fields that use Jeju’s biological resources.

The university’s president Song Seok-eon stated that a task force will be organized to help the advanced sciences departments to keep up with the latest paradigm shift and establish themselves as an icon of university innovation. The Jeju National University will actively promote its specialized strengths to attract promising new students, he added.
