Tamla Culture Research Institute to organize symposium on refugee issues
Conference to be held in College of Humanities Ⅱ on March 18 and 19
Jeju National University’s Tamla Culture Research Institute will hold a two-day academic conference to discuss refugee issues, starting from March 18.
On the first day, the participants will gather from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Seminar Room the university’s College of Humanities Ⅱ to join five lectures, under the theme of “Thinking of Borders: Heterogeneity and Homogeneity.”
The titles of the lectures include “The Comunitas and Immunitas of Unification” (Kim Jonggon, Konkuk University); “The trauma Due to National Division and the Narrative on National Division” (Nam Kyung Woo, Konkuk University); “The Era of Glocality and the Direction of Humanities Studies” (Min Young-hyun, Pusan National University); “A Religious Sociological Introspection into the Social Problematization of Religions” (Lim Young Bin, Yonsei University); and “The Unification and Inclusion Policies of Wang Geon, King Taejo of Goryeo Dynasty” (Kim Myeong-jin, Kyungpook National University).
The second-day, which is slated to be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on March 19, will address the theme of “’Jeju Island’: Perception and Abhorrence towards Others.”
The program will offer humanistic and sociological discussions on strangers, through the presentations titled “The Issue of Perceiving Others and Spaces for Heterogeneous Coexistence”; “Abhorrence, Dehumanization Strategies, and Subject (Re)alignment of People from North Korea”; “Jeju Residents’ Perception of Refugees”; and “A Confucian Ethics Approach to the Abhorrence towards Refugees.”
Director Jeon Young Joon of the Tamla Culture Research Institute expected that the conference will allow for an opportunity to build cooperation and solidarity for reducing abhorrence and hatred.
The conference has been organized as a part of the state-funded research project on the inclusive history and refugee issues of Jeju Island.
The whole of the conference will be broadcast live on the Facebook page of the Tamla Culture Research Institute.
