The JNU Korean Language Culture Center hosted the "19th Foreigner's Korean Speech Contest in Jeju" in celebration of the 579th Hangeul Day at the College of Humanities seminar room on October 11, 2025.
As prominent Korean language cultural event in Jejudo, the contest has been held annually since 2007 to commemorate Hangeul Day. The event provides a significant platform for participants of diverse nationalities to express their thoughts in Korean, fostering cultural exchange and mutual understanding. It also serves as an occasion to embody King Sejong's emphasized 'value of communication.'
This year, the contest was divided into a general session (for marriage immigrants, general migrants, and language school students) and a university session (for JNU's undergraduate, master's, and doctoral students).
A total of 23 participants from 8 countries competed in the event: 10 in the general session and 13 in the university session. Approximately 40 people, including the participants' families and acquaintances, visited the venue to cheer them on.
The grand prize went to Nisikawa Sena (Japan, Graduate School of Interpretation and Translation, Korean-Japanese Department), who spoke on the theme ‘Korean, The Wings of My Life.’ The Popularity Award went to Dolral (Mongolia, Global Autonomous Major), who presented on ‘The Story about Chile.’
Bae Young-hwan, head of the JNU Korean Language Culture Center, said, "The participants' Korean language skills have shown remarkable improvement over the years. This positive phenomenon reflects the rising global status of the Korean language."
