Jeju National University implements eco-friendly campus renewal projects by reusing existing building sites rather than developing new land.

In 2023, Jeju National University (JNU) was officially designated by the Ministry of Education (Notice No. 2023-382) to carry out the 5th University Dormitory BTL Project.
This project redevelops the existing student dormitory buildings (A-2 and A-3) located on the main Ara Campus, not through new land acquisition but by remodeling and reusing existing facilities within the current university grounds.

The redevelopment follows the national Build-Transfer-Lease (BTL) framework for sustainable infrastructure and includes:

• Project type: Brownfield redevelopment (remodeling of existing dormitory buildings)

• Total floor area: 12,005 m² (A-2 building 3,212 m² / A-3 building 8,793 m²)

• Site area: 14,644 m² within JNU Campus

• Capacity: 253 students

• Construction period: January 2025 – July 2026

• Total project cost: KRW 21.5 billion

Through this approach, JNU minimizes land disturbance and CO₂ emissions associated with new construction while maximizing the reuse of campus infrastructure.
The initiative aligns with Korea’s National Green Growth and Carbon Neutrality Policy and supports the principles of sustainable urban regeneration.

JNU is also applying the same principle of “building on previously developed land” for other key facilities such as the College of Engineering Building 1, College of Humanities Building 2, and the Main Administration Building, all of which are undergoing modernization projects through remodeling rather than expansion into undeveloped areas.
