Jeju National University (JNU) actively contributes to the development and implementation of sustainable development policies through formal participation in provincial government councils and public corporation advisory committees focused on the UN SDGs and ESG governance. The University’s faculty members engage in multi-stakeholder governance mechanisms addressing climate action, sustainable tourism, public health, and responsible consumption.

1. Participation in Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Carbon Neutrality and Green Growth Committee

To support Jeju’s 2050 Carbon Neutral and Green Growth Plan, Prof. Oh Hong-sik of JNU serves as Co-Chair of the provincial Carbon Neutrality and Green Growth Committee under the Governor of Jeju.
Through this committee, JNU contributes to policy design, monitoring, and adaptive management for regional carbon reduction strategies, directly supporting SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).

2. Collaboration with Jeju Environmental Health Center for Disease Prevention

The College of Medicine at JNU was designated by Jeju Province as the operating institution for the Jeju Environmental Disease Prevention and Management Center.
The Center partners with local NGOs and social welfare organisations to plan and deliver environmental health programmes for vulnerable groups, advancing SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being) and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities).

3. Participation in Jeju Tourism Organization ESG Management Advisory Committee

JNU professors from the Department of Tourism Management serve on the Jeju Tourism Organization’s ESG Management Advisory Committee, established to guide the integration of environmental, social, and governance principles into Jeju’s tourism sector.
JNU provides academic and strategic advice on responsible tourism policy, carbon-neutral destination planning, and community engagement, supporting SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).

4. Involvement in Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Sustainable Development Council (Jeju SDGs Council)

JNU faculty members participate in the provincial Sustainable Development Council (SDC), a multi-stakeholder advisory body that coordinates Jeju’s local implementation of the UN SDGs and develops regional sustainability indicators and policies.
Through this council, the University contributes to the design of the “Jeju Local Agenda 21” framework and to monitoring the progress of provincial sustainability initiatives, aligning with SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions) and SDG 17.

5. Engagement with Jeju Energy Corporation ESG Management Committee

JNU experts also serve as members of the Jeju Energy Corporation’s ESG Management Committee, providing academic advice for provincial energy transition strategies and climate-resilient infrastructure planning.
The committee guides public sector policy alignment with national carbon neutrality goals and corporate ESG standards, supporting SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) and SDG 13 (Climate Action).
